The first article, published in Evolution, measured female preferences for novel signal characteristics in grasshoppers. By generating artificial signals with components not currently found in natural male songs, some rules governing future signal evolution were discovered. Read more here.
The second article, published in the Journal of Experimental Biology, examined how female frogs process information contained in complex male acoustic signals. The nervous system processes sounds in two frequency channels, and this paper demonstrates that these two frequency channels differ in their ability to discriminate small differences in the time components of signals.
